This is a space I use to post information about my academic work and my art. I release the latter under the name patchbaydoor. I produce audio (sometimes video) that utilizes, both theoretically and in production, principles of chance, glitch, noise, and soundscapes. I come from a more traditional, albeit not classically-trained, sonic background, playing acoustic guitar and doing the songwriter thing. However, the work of casperelectronics, Reed Ghazala, Modified Toy Orchestra, and others inspired me to pursue a slightly different path in the last few years.
My name is Steven Hammer, and I reside with my family (partner, two young children, and a dog…) in Fargo, North Dakota, where I am pursuing my Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Writing, and Culture. My research is in sonic composition, ranging from production technologies to artistic processes. Some of my current research includes a no wave-inspired performance illustrating object-oriented/Latourian composition and authorship, an article on the evolution/decay/resurgence of the Casio SK-1 sampling synthesizer, interviews with San Fransisco-based electronic musicians on use of space/sound, and the use of sound in the college composition classroom.
I collaborate frequently with Linger (in the above picture with the guitar), and together we release under the name Black Boxes. You can listen to and download our stuff for free here.
Thanks for visiting–drop me a line.
